“POWER”
by Janice Packard
We had a beautiful day to spend at the Three Lynx Oak Grove Powerhouse, drinking in the scenery and taking in all the unique aspects of the place. A somewhat cool, misty morning gradually lifted to reveal a day of blue sky and fluffy clouds.
What struck me the most was the overwhelming variety of patterns and contrasts found not only in Nature but in the powerhouse as well. I had so many sketches, photos and notes it was difficult narrowing the focus of my imagery; so many options presented themselves. One obvious idea emerged from the commonality of my sketches: the contrast between the man-made and Nature. What developed were three sections of the composition that would seemingly blend, yet give the impression of separate elements. The top section represents the lush softness of the surrounding forest; the middle section was inspired by the rhythmic water patterns found near the powerhouse; the bottom section representing the strength within the pattern of the steel grid structures outside the powerhouse.
Also, I fell in love the with equipment gauges and could not discard their idea, so I chose to 'ghost' them in as one more man-made element. The power lines add one more layer of connection. All these things marry together to show
the veracity, interdependence and overall 'power' the Oak Grove Powerhouse and its surrounding landscape carries within
