“Oak Grove Topside”

At the Oak Grove Powerhouse I was immediately drawn to the wall of gleaming gauges from the Pelton Water Wheel Company. These highly polished analog dials have been silently monitoring invisible forces for early 90 years. On this brilliantly sunny day, the reflections from the 30-foot-high, arched windows obscured the readouts. This small and compact powerhouse packs a condensed wallop, with water falling a quarter mile, crashing through the turbines at 700 cubic feet per second. While computers calculate the kilowatt output, I prefer these stately, timeless measures of water flow – these quiet servants lovingly polished by keepers of the power plant.
